Highly Efficient and Environmentally Responsible Systems

Solar energy systems designed by Eco Solar are the most efficient on the market. Science plays a key role in every design. Their mission is to create high-efficiency solar pool heating systems and swimming pool filtration systems that use significantly less electricity than those installed by their competitors.

Exceeding Energy Standards

Eco Solar offers the most energy efficient systems on the market. Doug Rotermund, the founder of Eco Solar, installed a solar heated pool system at his Concord residence, which has 15 panels and 688 square feet of collector. During the swimming season, the filtration system circulates 10 tons of water per hour through the pool filtration system for 5.7 cents per hour (PGE at 40.643 cents/kwh, as of March 1, 2023) Turning on the solar raises the electrical consumption from 140 watts per hour to about 350 watts per hour, still only costing 14.2 cents per hour for filtration and solar heating. This can only be done by plumbing the solar loop in a series/dual pass configuration. Comparing this method to heating the pool with a 400,000 BTU gas heater is rather amazing. When a gas heater is used, the variable speed pump needs to ramp up to a much higher speed in order to satisfy the flow requirements necessary to engage the pressure and flow safety switches, a speed at least 50% higher than a series/dual pass solar loop requires. Being conservative  this would cause the pump to consume an additional 500 watts at least. On top of that a therm (100,000 BTU’s) of natural gas (PGE gas tariff book March 1st 2023) cost $3.14 per therm. Therefore a 400 K heater cost $12.56 cents/hour plus an additional 20.32 cents/hour for the increased pump speed. $12.56 plus 20.32 cents = $12.76 per hour

$12.76/14.2 cents = 89.85. Rounding up here, the solar heats the water 90 times cheaper than a gas heater. In other words for every $1 of solar heating cost the gas heater costs $90.

So if a solar system costs twice what a gas heater does but heats 90 times cheaper, I’ve already decided.

Water Circulation System

The circulation pump used to filter, heat, and move the water throughout your solar-powered pool consumes electricity. Since the solar panels are on top of the roof, the pump has to work harder to push the water through the additional pipes, valves, and fittings up to 12 ft off the ground on 1 story roofs and 23 ft off the ground on 2 story roofs. During swim season, the electric bill may increase significantly on a traditional solar-powered pool system because the pump runs up to eight hours a day. Eco Solar has perfected the use of variable speed pumps to drastically reduce energy consumption year-round, not just in the summer months.

Energy Efficient Systems

Eco Solar uses approximately 1/3 the energy of your microwave oven to heat and filter your swimming pool with solar energy. This impressive energy efficiency is unmatched by any other solar or pool company.
